About This Course

Malnutrition is both a cause and a consequence of crises. This course, based on WHO, UNICEF, and Sphere guidance, equips learners to prevent, detect, and manage acute malnutrition in emergency and fragile settings such as South Sudan. Topics include malnutrition classification and measurement, the CMAM (Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition) model, infant and young child feeding in emergencies, micronutrient deficiencies, nutrition surveys, and the coordination of nutrition responses in humanitarian contexts. It is designed for nutrition nurses, clinic staff, community health workers, and programme officers.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Classify acute malnutrition using MUAC, oedema, and weight-for-height
- Explain and apply the CMAM model (community mobilisation, outpatient, inpatient, stabilisation)
- Support infant and young child feeding in emergencies (IYCF-E)
- Recognise and address key micronutrient deficiencies
- Contribute to nutrition surveys and surveillance (SMART, IPC)
- Describe coordination structures for emergency nutrition responses

Prerequisites

Open to health and nutrition staff and students. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health course pairs well with this one but is not required.
