About This Course

Every pregnancy and birth deserves skilled, respectful care. Aligned with WHO recommendations, this course covers the continuum of care for mothers and children: pre-pregnancy and antenatal care, safe delivery and emergency obstetric care, postnatal care, essential newborn care, child survival interventions, and adolescent health. Grounded in South Sudan's context, one of the world's highest maternal mortality settings, the course emphasises practical, evidence-based actions for midwives, nurses, clinical officers, community health workers, and facility managers, including early danger-sign recognition, referral, and family planning.

What You Will Learn

  • By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
  • - Describe the continuum of care from pre-pregnancy through childhood
  • - Provide antenatal care following the WHO 8-contact model
  • - Recognise and respond to obstetric and newborn danger signs
  • - Support clean, safe delivery and immediate newborn care
  • - Deliver postnatal care for mother and baby
  • - Apply integrated child survival interventions (IMNCI principles)
  • - Counsel families on family planning and birth spacing

Prerequisites

  • Open to all health workers and students. Clinical cadres will find direct practice guidance; community health workers will find the essentials for counselling, danger-sign recognition, and referral.
